[Anniston] [May 14-Jul 15, 2011]
May 14-Jul 15, Anniston Courage Under Fire: The 1961 Burning of the Freedom Rider Bus in Anniston 256-236-0996. www.spiritofanniston.org. Free. Calhoun County Public Library--60+ photographic panels depicting the May 14, 1961 attack by violent segregationists on the first Freedom Ride. Taken by a local newspaper photographer, the famous images, which flashed around the world, showed the mob at the downtown Greyhound Bus Station and the attack outside of town when the bus broke down from slashed tires. The photographs helped ignite national and international outrage at the treatment of African Americans in the South, and finally forced the federal government to take stronger action in dealing with segregationist resistance.
