Freedom Quilting Bee

View all Alberta attractionsThe Freedom Quilting Bee is a quilting cooperative established in 1966 by a group of African American women in the community of Rehoboth, 46 miles from Selma in Wilcox County. The cooperative started as an outgrowth of the Civil Rights Movement and developed as a way for poor black craftswomen in Alabama's Black Belt to earn money for their families. Most of the members rallied for voting rights in the Selma-to-Montgomery March and protested against segregation in their own local communities. The group's products include various sizes of quilts (Grandmother's Dream, Bear Claw, Grandmother's Choice and Coat of Many Colors), potholders, place mats and napkins which can be purchased directly from the cooperative (by phone or in person) or through Black Belt Treasures (334-682-9878) in Camden.
