Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama is known for getting people on the road, but some might be surprised at how successful their tours are at doing this. Almost 65,000 visitors have toured HMMA since the plant started offering tours in 2005, and many of those visitors traveled at least 100 miles to take them. HMMA, estimates that about 40 percent of the 400 guests each week are from at least 100 miles away. That means that about 10,000 people yearly tour HMMA who are not from the Montgomery area and surrounding communities. HMMA is not alone in what Alabama Tourism calls factory tourism. Mercedes at Tuscaloosa, Alabama's first automotive manufacturing plant, and Honda, near Lincoln, also offer tours. While there are no estimates concerning the economic impact of its visitors, HMMA's on-site gift shop stays busy following tours. HMMA has a trio of wall maps - one of Alabama, one of North America and one of the world - hanging in the lobby of its visitor center. Guests receive a pin to stick in the map at their hometown. Most pins are clustered around Montgomery, but there are large groups of pins in other places. Atlanta is well represented, as are most towns of any size in Alabama. Detroit, home of the U.S. auto industry, has plenty of pins. Western Florida is another concentration. Most countries around the world are also represented. Groups, usually schools, churches, military, senior citizens and civic clubs,love to visit. People who are just passing through on their way to somewhere else also stop in. The tours fill up quickly, but if there are only a few people wanting to take the tour, sometimes they can call at the last minute to try to get the last couple of seats remaining on a tour, which handles 32 visitors. You can also have your name put on a waiting list to be called if seats become available.
