Spot of Tea in is the heart of downtown Mobile, Alabama. Located across from Cathedral Square, this handsome Georgian brick structure, accented by dormer windows, occupies a landmark 1836 building that, through the decades, has housed a department store, dry cleaner, Sunday School, church and more. The upper floor, with its long balcony and tall French doors, serves as a spacious bed and breakfast. Spot of Tea offers breakfast, brunch, lunch, tea and special events. Umbrella-topped sidewalk tables lend a Parisian air to the setting. Guests enter the restaurant through a central gift shop featuring Hallmark cards and gifts, to reach the main dining room overlooking Cathedral Square, the Victorian tea room or the Carriage Way. The latter features an arched ceiling, original floors of Bellingrath tile. A dressing-room mirror from the old department store occupies a special spot, and another wall showcases a handsome mural depicting our section of Dauphin Street. L'estrade Dinner Theatre, a recent addition, seats 200 and occupies a former warehouse in the rear, a game room with a billiards table, ping-pong table and golf putting-range on the upper-floor of L'estrade. "Tony always loved to cook, and starting this restaurant was his idea," said his mother, Ruby Thompson Moore, who now handles the restaurant's marketing. Inspired by a visit to a teahouse out of state, Tony immersed himself in research about tea. He then found the ideal location and persuaded his mother to join him in the venture. Now, four expansions and 10 years later, Spot of Tea continues to brew bigger than ever. Eggs Cathedral, the signature breakfast choice, features an English muffin topped with a crab cake, eggs and seafood sauce. Other options include seafood eggs Benedict with blackened shrimp spicing up the traditional version or French toast topped with bananas foster sauce and sliced bananas. Other menu selections include omelets, soups, sandwiches and salads. "Our big priorities are freshness and temperature," Ruby said. "Hot is hot and cold is cold." Mobilians voted Spot of Tea's Loaded Potato Soup, a signature item here, the city's favorite soup five years running. But why take their word for it? Come on to our fine city and experience our fine food and hospitality. As for the restaurant's specialty coffees and teas, flavors might range from cranberry, elderberry, mango mist, and wild blackberry to peppermint and earl gray. But it's the delicious strawberry tea that continues to collect the city's "Reader's Choice Awards." All in all, Spot of Tea is a perfect place for sipping sweet tea (the table wine of the South) and enjoying life.
