Coosa River
The first set of rapids is called River Falls. Here you'll see a few small islands, where the river narrows and you encounter three sets of Class I and Class II rapids. Choose your way through these, and soon after you'll be relaxing in slow calm waters once again, until...
Moccasin Gap. This is one of the premier Class II/III rapid runs in the region. To the right of the Gap is a chute into Class III rapids, where you need to do some heavy paddling to make it through unscathed. The rush of water from up-river will roll you over in a second as you sweep right just before the natural path of the large rocks of the Gap. If you capsize here, wait it out awhile because there's no slow shallow area to right your boat along the bank for a long time... just roll with the flow.
Just before the take-out is the final set of rapids called Pipeline. Less intense than Moccasin Gap, it's only a little while longer until you make it to the take-out. You'll float under the high CR 14 bridge, then quickly on river left is the take-out.
Many concerned businesses and organizations are dedicated to the preservation of the Coosa. Just go online and type in "Coosa River Alabama" for a sampling of the passion the good people of Alabama have for one of their many remarkable natural resources... the Coosa River.
