Rickwood Caverns

Poor Fair Good Excellent Extraordinary
The wonders that await you on this hike, which is known as the "Miracle Mile," are truly astounding. Formed thousands of years ago, the cavern here at Rickwood holds evidence of the vast, prehistoric ocean that once covered this land. Fossil records of ancient marine life from over 260 million years ago (the Mississippian Period) line the walls.

White limestone formations tower above you as you hike down into the magnificently lighted passageways. And there is evidence that this is still a work-in-progress as drops of water drip from the ceiling off the multi-colored flowstones as they continue to build ever longer.

A recognized member of the National Caves Association, Rickwood Cavern is an amazing hike for the entire family. In addition to the cave, the park has ancient artifacts on display that date back over 2,000 years, nature trails and fossil trails. The park is open every day during the summer, weekends only in the fall and spring (refer to the "Hours" section below), and closed in the winter. The hike into the cave is a guided tour. Maps are available for you to trace your route at the park office or online (refer to the "Additional Information" section).
