Styx River

The Styx is one of those rivers in Alabama that is known more for its attitude – slow and relaxing – than it is for any of its serene beauty. A four-mile stretch is a favorite among partyin' tubers, or toobers as it's spelled, where the tonnage of floating food and beverage coolers sometimes outweighs the floaters themselves. And on the way are good times consisting of picnicking, volleyball and grilling on sandbars, and the like. If you want it, just float it along with you. If you plan to venture the full trip on your own, here's a short description. The current most of the way is gently flowing. There are a few islands along the way that sometime require portaging around...usually nothing too bad, but if you're unlucky you may experience a tough climb up the bank followed by a portage through pretty thick brush. The first section of the river after the put-in (especially if you use the alternate CR 64 put-in) presents some steep muddy banks that are not conducive for pull-ups. Just enjoy the relative remoteness and what nature has to offer, as later on you may begin to encounter more boat traffic.

The last couple of miles take you to where the Styx and Perdido Rivers come together. The flow slows, and the water gets deep and wide. Powerboat traffic increases, so stay to the Alabama side (the right side as you float toward the take-out).

If you plan on renting a boat or tube from one of the local rental places, make sure you call ahead. Due to some recent major hurricanes, and depending on the time of year, rental companies sometimes cut back on outings and establish minimum groupings.
