Treetop Nature Trail

Poor Fair Good Excellent Extraordinary
Over 2,500 birds, mammals and reptiles come through the doors of the Alabama Wildlife Center at Oak Mountain State Park each year. These animals arrive either physically impaired or orphaned. The mission of the Center is to rehabilitate the animals so that they can be returned to the wild and thrive on their own.

This trail starts off on the Eagle Trail for .3 miles before joining with the Treetop Trail. Along this elevated boardwalk you will see first-hand the work of the dedicated volunteers and staff of the AWC. Here in a natural setting of oaks, dogwoods and hickory trees, with a babbling brook nearby, many of the rescued animals will be seen, such as barred owls, red-tail hawks, great horned owls, black vultures and many more. Benches are situated along the trail so that you can peacefully sit and watch the wildlife.

The trail culminates in a visit to the Center itself. Here you can view the work of the staff through one-way glass so the recuperating process will not be disturbed. It is a fascinating look behind the scenes of this valuable organization.

The Treetop Trail is wide and easily accessible by wheelchairs.
