The Vulcan 10K Run ~ Winner of the 2006 Inaugural RRCA Club Road Race of the Year Award The Birmingham Track Club (BTC) is a non-profit organization of 32+ years in the Birmingham area. The BTC mission statement is “to promote physical fitness throughout the membership and the community, specifically through running and positive health habits”. Our premier event that the BTC produces is the Vulcan 10K Run and One Mile Fun Run events. The BTC is a member of the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) which is the national association for not-for-profit running clubs dedicated to promoting long-distance running as a competitive sport and healthful exercise. In 2006, the RRCA launched the Road Race of the Year to acknowledge RRCA nonprofit member races that provide safe, well designed and enjoyable races which promote grassroots running and the mission of the RRCA. With the hugely successful running of the 2006 Vulcan Run, the RRCA selected the Vulcan 10K Run, in association of the Birmingham Track Club, as the winner of the Inaugural RRCA Club Road Race Of the Year Award from among the 740 RRCA member clubs. The Vulcan Run has held the honor of being the RRCA Alabama State 10K Championship for 4 years, 2002 – 2005, and in 2006 RRCA Southern Regional 10K Championship. The Vulcan Run will also have the honor of hosting the 2007 RRCA National 10K Championship event, November 3, 2007. The Vulcan Run received honors from Runner’s World magazine, being named one of Six Seasonal Favorite Races in the November 2006 issue. The Vulcan Run, one of Alabama’s oldest and most prestigious running and racing events, began in 1975 as the Bicentennial Run. The following year the event was renamed the Vulcan Run to honor Birmingham’s iron and steel heritage. With the route located in the heart of Birmingham, the Vulcan Run is a much anticipated tradition in the life of the City. In the 1980’s the Vulcan Run was considered the “Premiere 10K Road Race of the South”. Over the past several years’, participation in the 10K race has increased from 922 in 2001 to 1814 participants in 2006, making it Birmingham’s largest 10K road race.
