The Visual Arts And Communications Academy

Irondale | Jefferson County

Jefferson County’s Visual Arts and Communications Academy is a unique program established to create a partnership between cutting edge career technical preparation and traditional fine art academics. The Academy is dedicated to nurturing bright, motivated high school students interested in a career in Fine Art, Photography, Illustration, Cartooning, Graphic Design, Three-Dimensional Graphics, Web Design, Desktop Publishing, Animation and Sequential Art. These fields are all driven by technology and require a high degree of specialized training. The Visual Arts and Communications Academy provides the student with that training and a solid foundation in art theory, design and aesthetics. Advanced students develop a relevant curriculum tailored to their individual needs. The academy offers excellent college preparation and the Art curriculum is quite rigorous culminating with either the AP Exam or the IB Exam. This preparation assures that our students will find success in both university and the work place and that they will be prepared for the competitive demands of the twenty-first century. Enrollment is not limited to Jefferson county residents, but out of district students must pay tuition. Admission into the Visual Arts and Communications Academy is competitive. Prospective students must submit a portfolio, an application for admission with transcripts, statement of intent, and two letters of recommendation.
