The Peerless Saloon

There‘s plenty of history at the Peerless Saloon which first opened in 1899, serving Wildcat Whiskey in a 7-ounce “scant” bottle and featuring a brothel in the upstairs Atlanta Room.  It reopened in 1992, after being placed on the U.S. Register of Historic Places. With a massive mirror backed mahogany bar, booths from church pews there is plenty of old grandeur to look at while you listen to live music with Jam sessions on Thursday and regional and local bands playing Friday and Saturday.

Long Branch Opry

Located in the Ruth Community, on the outskirts of Arab, the Long Branch Opry has long been thrilling fans with a diverse mix of bluegrass and bluegrass gospel music. Housed in a 6,000 square feet pole barn building built from timber milled onsite.  Often 600 fans arrive to hear the musicians during the once a month performance.

For more than 20 years, pickers have joined together every Thursday at 5:30pm  in Ardmore for a night of pickin’ and grinnin’.  Musicians from all around the area meet in Ardmore for a night of fun, live music and great dancing at the Annex Building located behind Peoples State Bank of Commerce on Main Street.  The event is free and everyone is welcome.

The Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce Tourism Council hosts live concerts on the Limestone County Courthouse lawn every 3rd Friday (April – September) at 6:00 PM.  The concerts are free and everyone is welcome.  Local downtown restaurants stay open late to accommodate those attending the concerts.

Bring your own drinks and donate to the band when the hat is passed.  It’s part of the experience at Gip’s Place, a dilapidated shack in the backyard of Henry Gipson’s home that sits beside the big curve along the 3100 block of Avenue C in Bessemer.   Henry Gipson is a gravedigger by day and a musician at night. For over 50 years the best musicians have been coming to his backyard to play.  No exact schedule, which is part of the charm of this authentic juke joint.

Music fans of all ages can hear artists playing folk, Americana, roots, country or bluegrass in a casual mini-theater family friendly environment. Beverages and food are not sold at this music hall located in a Birmingham neighborhood on Shades Crest Road but you may bring your own small cooler. Cash donations are requested to compensate the artist performing.

The Oasis was one of the local bars where Taylor Hicks performed before becoming an American Idol winner.  Hicks has called The Oasis a great venue for people to watch performers.  Hicks walked up and down the bar during his performances there. Live music with bands Thursday through Saturday and Acoustic Monday night is part of the draw of this establishment in the Lakeview District of Birmingham. Music on Monday starting at 8pm-11pm and Thursday- Saturday starting at 10pm.

Located underneath the 35th Street Bridge on 1st Ave South, Old Car Heaven has a large stage where bands perform on occasion, a patio, which is home to several classic cars, with jazz Tuesday and Wednesday from 6p-9p. Their slogan is “Where old cars go to live forever.” The collection features, a 1915 Packard, and one specimen of every Plymouth convertible produced between 1941 and 1965.  Live music performed up to five days a week.

Ona’s Music Room

In 1986, Ona Watson was the youngest person inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame.  Watson’s love of music inspired Ona’s Music Room which opened in 1997.  Ona’s Music Room has been named the “best Jazz Club” in Birmingham by Birmingham Magazine, and one of the top “10 Jazzy Places” in the country by USA Today.   Live music Tuesday through Saturday.
