Rabbittown Café and Fiddlers Hall holds many memories for the community. Spare instruments lie on the shelf waiting for customers to pick them up and play. Each Friday and Saturday after 4:00pm various groups from the local area, and sometimes further away come and play for the audience. Everyone is invited to bring along their instruments and/or voices and participate.

Red Hill Community Venue

In the same auditorium that Hank Williams drew crowds, musicians still gather in the Red Hill community 40 miles northeast of Montgomery. The Red Hill School Building auditorium, located near Lake Martin, has been the place for local live music every Friday night from 7p to 9p year round except for the week of Christmas to New Years. The performances are held Open Stage style with all musicians using acoustic instruments welcomed to play with the regular group of back-up players. Often these jam sessions swell to a dozen musicians playing music from bluegrass to jitterbug for crowds of 100 that come to dance and listen. No admission charge but donations are welcomed to maintain the building and pay for refreshments.

Legendary local performer Travis Womack and Butch “Big Arms” Ledford perform from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday evenings at The Southland. This restaurant has been in the Shoals area for more than 50 years and was once frequented by the likes of Elvis Presley during his early career, when he played concerts at the Sheffield Recreation Center.

Live music can be heard every Wednesday through Sunday and on the second Tuesday of the month at the Blue Gill Restaurant. The Local Color Café is a cozy restaurant featuring live music Friday and Saturday evenings year round. During the summer season, Thursday night open mike and songwriters events are held on the outdoor patio. Some of the regular musicians to perform include a local trio called Something Else whose family members once toured the country during the 20s, 30s and 40s. Other artists include Janet O’Neil who first started playing when she was 10 years old, and performs a wide range of music including folk, country, pop and blues. The Ain’t Dead Yet Band is a group with tight harmonies reminiscent of Crosby, Stills and Nash. On any weekend music may include bluegrass, folk, blues, jazz, 60s and standards.
