There's no teacher like experience. And no state like Alabama when it comes to historic educational opportunities. Caves, archaeological sites, museums and historic homes all offer your tour group a hands-on chance to see and experience the people and places that make up our state's rich heritage. And if you're not careful, you just might learn something.

Field Trips

Tuscumbia, Alabama

Prepared for Student Group, 4th grade
9:30 a.m. Guides will meet group at the Colbert County Tourism and Convention Bureau Welcome Center, 719 U.S. Highway 72 West, Tuscumbia (Directions: From Hwy. 43/72 intersection, continue about 2.5 miles).  Restrooms, maps, directions and other information available here. Depart on a tour of the Muscle Shoals area. 
10:00 a.m. Tour Ivy Green, birthplace of Helen Keller, "America's First Lady of Courage." (Depart at 10:45) 
11:00 a.m. Lunch at The Palace Ice Cream and Sandwich Shop, a restored 19th-century drug store soda fountain. Select from their famous chili hot dog, hamburger or other options, plus drink and ice cream cup.(Depart at 12:00) 
12:15 p.m. Tour the Tuscumbia Railway Station, a Victorian-era train depot. Here students may have a virtual experience as an engineer or a conductor of a train, and students may send and receive telegraph messages in Morse code. An armband admission includes all rides in Spring Park. (Depart at 1:00) 
1:00 p.m. Visit Tuscumbia's Spring Park, to discover Tuscumbia's rich Native American history, as you stroll along Cold Water Falls and observe the American Indian statuary commemorating the "Trail of Tears."Then enjoy the amusements of Spring Park, including train rides, carousel and Python Roller Coaster. 
2:00 p.m. Depart from area.

9:00 a.m. Guide will meet group at designated location in Florence. 
9:15 a.m. Tour the Indian Mound Museum, located at the foot of the largest Indian mound in the Tennessee Valley.  Called "Wawmanona," the mound is the legacy of prehistoric peoples from the Woodland culture. 
10:00 a.m.  Tour Pope's Tavern, to discover life in the nineteenth-century, from the days of stagecoach travel in Florence to the days of the Civil War when Pope's Tavern served as a hospital. 
11:00 a.m. Visit the log cabin birthplace of W.C. Handy, "Father of the Blues" and composer of "St. Louis Blues." 
12:00 noon "Sock Hop" lunch at the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, which includes pizza, soft drink, cookie other music, games, fun and a tour of the museum.Your group may make its own "hit recording" at Muscle Shoals. Sweet Home Alabama! 
2:15 p.m. Tour Ivy Green, Birthplace of Helen Keller, "America's First Lady of Courage." 
3:00 p.m. Enjoy amusements in Spring Park, including train ride, carousel, and Python Roller Coaster. Snow cones in the concession stand. 
4:00 p.m. Or enjoy an ice cream stop at The Palace, a restored 19th-century drug store soda fountain. 
4:30 p.m. Depart from area.
