Black-Owned Restaurants in Alabama

January 2021

Are you hungry to support Black-owned restaurants in Alabama?

From pizza to barbecue, we have you covered. Check out this list of five Black-owned restaurants serving up culinary masterpieces in Sweet Home Alabama.

Post Office Pies; Birmingham

Post Office Pies, located in Avondale near downtown Birmingham, has been serving up perfect slices to patrons since 2014. As the name suggests, this restaurant is located in an old post office and is frequently making headlines for creating incredible hand-tossed, wood-fired pizzas and seasonal salads under Head Chef and Owner John Hall. And, of course, being neighbors with a local watering hole, Avondale Brewing Company, POP features tons of beer on tap in addition to one-of-a-kind cocktails. While some say the classic pepperoni is their go-to favorite, “The Swine” is mouth-wateringly delicious with tomato sauce, sausage, slab bacon, pepperoni, aged mozzarella and fresh basil - you can see why it made the 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama list. The success of the flagship location recently prompted the addition of a second location in Mountain Brook. Both restaurants provide an elevated version of the classic crowd pleaser.

Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ; Birmingham

Owner and James Beard Award-winning Chef Rodney Scott of Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ has been perfecting the art of creating mouthwatering barbecue for over 25 years, and in 2019, Scott brought this masterpiece to the Birmingham area. The popular, expanded menu includes delicious creations like Rod’s whole-hog pork and other favorites including burgers, ribs, smoked chicken wings and crispy fried catfish. The restaurant also offers a variety of classic sides like potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, collard greens and hushpuppies. Top your meal off with the restaurant’s banana pudding or its popular freshly-baked hand pies. In addition to offering true culinary wonders, the restaurant’s inviting atmosphere lifts the spirits of every customer who visits.

J.W. Beverette’s Soul Food; Montgomery

Teresa Jackson, the restaurant’s owner, opened her lifelong dream of J.W. Beverette’s around three years ago in Montgomery. Each of the restaurant's delicious offerings is spurred from Jackson’s family recipes, including the fried chicken and black-eyed peas, which is why this restaurant is featured on our list of 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama. Jackson’s fried chicken is truly some of the prettiest fried chicken we’ve ever seen with a beautiful golden brown color that will make your  mouth start to water just by looking at it, and the black-eyed peas are cooked in chicken stock, so you know they are gonna be good. In addition to the fried chicken and black-eyed peas, the restaurant also serves plenty of Southern favorites, including fried catfish, pork chops, oxtails, ribs and more.

Lannie’s Bar-B-Q Spot; Selma

Family-owned and operated since the 1940s, Lannie’s Bar-B-Q Spot in Selma has been the go-to locale for delicious spare ribs, barbecue and more for over half a century. While Lannie’s is known for serving up whole hog, Boston butt and to-die-for ribs, their homemade sides deserve a shout out as well - okra, baked beans, potato salad and corn nuggets give patrons something else to write home about. Not to be outdone, their cherry hand pies round out a solid Southern meal with a classic dessert.

Foy Superfoods; Mobile

When husband-and-wife owners Liz Garza and John Smith opened Foy Superfoods, they wanted to bring a fresh approach to fast food, and that is exactly what they did. From smoothies and acai bowls to sandwiches, quesadillas, and super tacos, Foy has a variety of healthy offerings that you can enjoy. Although all of their fresh offerings are truly delicious, the restaurant's super bowls appear to be a hit with options like the Southwestern made with brown rice, spinach, roasted sweet potatoes, black beans, corn, Southwestern seasoning, pico de gallo and topped off with a honey chipotle vinaigrette.
