Lake Guntersville, An End-of-the-Summer Getaway

With summer winding down, many are looking for a last-minute getaway. Wouldn’t it be nice to have one more relaxing trip before the hustle and bustle of life transitions into fall’s busy season? Lake Guntersville State Park offers many family-friendly outdoor activities for a beautiful, scenic end-of-the-summer getaway. The state park is located on 6,000 acres of woodland along the Tennessee River in Northeast Alabama. Visitors can stay at the park’s hotel or in one of the mountain-setting chalets or cottages. If camping suits you more, then the park offers an onsite camping ground. After you are settled in, there are many outdoor activities for the nature lover.
Eagle’s Nest 18-Hole Golf Course
This premier, championship golf course located on Taylor Mountain, offers scenic mountain views, Bermuda Tiff greens and a state-of-the-art irrigation system. The treeline course and elevation changes make the course challenging, even for the most seasoned golfer.
Fishing Lake Guntersville
Lake Guntersville is the largest lake in Alabama stretching 75 miles from Nickajack Dam to Guntersville Dam. The lake is known for its large-mouth bass and year-round bass fishing tournaments, but in actuality, a variety of fish can be caught in the lake. Species such as bream, bluegill, redear sunfish and longear sunfish, crappie, sauger and catfish.
Screaming Eagle Zipline
Ziplining at Lake Guntersville allows visitors to soar through the air like eagles among the treetops of Taylor Mountain. Lake Guntersville State Park partners with Historic Banning Mills to offer one of the best ziplining experiences in the country. Lake Guntersville is known for its Bald Eagle Awareness conservation program. The ziplining experience gives visitors the opportunity to see habitats and scenic views from high above the treetops.
Horseback Riding Tour
The horseback riding tours are offered through the Alabama Horseback Riding Adventures. Visitors can book a one or two-hour ride on the state park’s scenic trails. Lake Guntersville is an outdoorsman’s paradise with 36 miles of hiking and biking trails. However, if you’re looking for other outdoor activities, Buck’s Pocket State Park and High Falls State Park are a short 30-minute drive from Lake Guntersville.
Art and History
For art and history lovers, the Guntersville Museum and Cultural Center gives visitors a glimpse into the history of the area. In addition, the Center offers local artists a place to exhibit their artwork.
