Main-Yankee Street Historic District

The Town of Gainesville which was once among the largest towns in the State of Alabama is home to several historical homes, churches, cemeteries, and monument. The Main-Yankee Street Historic District is roughly bounded by Main, Washington, and Yankee Streets, and the district includes all of the historic homes and buildings on those two streets; there are five historical homes in this District. Also located in this District on Yankee Street is the site of the Old Female Academy, which was a two-story girls' school before Civil War, and during the Civil War served as a hospital for wounded soldiers.
